I grew up in Ottawa. An ambitious high school Environmental Studies class introduced me to Lanark County and Hopetown, where I first got close to a bee colony. On a recent Ontario book tour I visited settings in Mad Honey, places embellished with imagination, landscape backdrops to the mysterious disappearances of bees, Beck Wise and Charlie Makepeace. It was thrilling and surreal to visit locales that, though not exactly as I had remembered, resembled my memories closely enough to bring shivers of recognition. I will update this gallery with photos from a 2017 reconnaissance trip to Cuba where Eurydice and Matthew Wise, Beck’s parents, met and fell in love.
